Statement in Support of Autonomous Administration of North & East Syria/Rojava against Military Aggression

This statement was released on February 1, 2026.

We, organisations and individuals who are part of the Global Tapestry of Alternatives, a network of groups and movements from around the planet, stand together in our unwavering support for the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES)/Rojava. For over 14 years, the AANES/Rojava has created a multiethnic, directly democratic, council and assembly-based society, rooted in gender equality, ecology, autonomy and restorative justice. Their initiatives have been appreciated worldwide, providing hope and inspiration for countless people and communities who care about peace, justice, and democracy, and are crucial for others to learn from.

This unique example of horizontal democracy, with millions of civilians within and around it, is under a murderous attack by the Syrian government, coordinated with Turkey.

Representatives from AANES have attempted to engage in dialogue with the new Syrian government. There has never been a call for secession, but instead for a democratic and decentralized Syria, that recognizes all ethnic and cultural diversity as well as gender equality. However, these attempts have not been met with sustained response from the Syrian state.

The breakdown of talks has been followed by military operations affecting majority-Kurdish civilian neighborhoods in Aleppo, forcing the displacement of about 155,000 civilians. Human rights organizations and local monitors have raised serious concerns about arbitrary arrests, disappearances, extrajudicial executions, reprisals against civilians and attacks on civilian infrastructure. Despite one announced ceasefire after another, the Syrian government army and assorted other militia and armed entities continue to advance across north-east Syria, posing serious threats to the millions of people living there.

In only a few days the Syrian army has freed thousands of Da'esh (Islamic State / ISIS) members from prison who are already taking part in the war against the Kurds and other ethnic communities, within and around AANES / Rojava, attacking women and girls in particular, and this will assuredly lead to more attacks across the world.

We stand firmly with the people of AANES and call for our friends and allies to stand together to defend and protect the Rojava revolution and the processes of real democracy and freedom – respecting women’s autonomy and all ethnicities, religions and cultures.
