The mission of Holot: Crossroads of Global Violence is to explore the urgent and complex issues associated with the existence of the Holot detention facility in Israel, which currently houses more than 3,000 asylum-seekers from Sudan and Eritrea. By bringing together a range of critical perspectives on these issues, including the perspectives of asylum-seekers themselves, we seek to spark dialogue, provoke debate, and inspire people to action.  Scroll down to learn how you can become a part of this exciting project!

Here you will find all of the latest videos, first-hand articles, and independent analysis we are gathering related to the Holot issue. Click through to see how we are weaving these perspectives together in order to give a fuller picture of the story.

Our project begins with the voices, experiences, and aspirations of asylum-seekers themselves. The Silent Voice From Holot website gathers first-hand reports from Holot citizen journalists describing their stories and the conditions of their lives.

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS - Holot: crossroads of global violence

In order to surround the Holot story with the layers of context that it deserves, we are looking for people who can help us analyze the story from various angles. Key questions include:

  • What does the existence of Holot tell us about the "long shadow" of the world's history of genocide and other forms of mass violence during the past two centures? What does it tell us about how the world responds to mass violence in the 21st century?
  • What does Holot tell us about the legal, spatial, racial, and other dynamics associated with contemporary political violence and the forms of migration that it generates?
  • How does Holot fit within the ongoing history of the colonization of Palestine and with Israel's military and other involvement in sub-Saharan Africa?
  • How can we respond most effectively to the human rights violations associated with Holot and to the plight of asylum-seekers more generally? What is the way forward?

The subject we are tackling is complex, entangled in layers of contradictions and conflict. Making sense of it requires that we weave together a plurality of voices communicating through different mediums. To this end, Holot: Crossroads of Global Violence welcomes scholarly, journalistic and artistic contributions that will help us add layers of context around the first-hand testimony featured in the Silent Voice from Holot project (
